Shots fired investigation leads to drug trafficking arrest

A shots fired investigation early Tuesday morning led to the arrest of a man for trafficking in synthetic drugs.

Hopkinsville police officers were at North Drive and the rail-trail at about 1:30 a.m. serving a man with an unrelated warrant when they heard about five gunshots coming from the area of 15th Street and Phelps Avenue.

Officers headed that way, saw a car turning from 15th onto North Drive and initiated a traffic stop.

An arrest citation says 41-year old Derek Allan Williams of Hopkinsville continued driving slowly until coming to a stop at Canton and Cypress Street.

Police say he appeared nervous and claimed he had just left the Durrett Avenue area. A search of the vehicle allegedly revealed a bag of ‘spice’ under the driver’s seat.

Williams was arrested and charged with trafficking in synthetic drugs.
