Ground was broken Tuesday afternoon for the new location for Joe Mumford Park as construction begins on Woodmill Road.
Trees have already been cleared from the area that will house the park between Sharpe Street and East 18th Street. Mayor Carter Hendricks says this park has had some opposition, but it shows that the city is willing and excited to invest in that community and bring where families can fellowship together.
City councilmember Patricia Bell says she has never given up on this project, and it will help boost that area in multiple ways for years to come.
Sandra Lott is the president of the Durrett Avenue Neighborhood Association and says this park will help the neighborhood move forward in a positive way.
Once construction is complete, the park will be home to a playground, full-sized basketball court, pavilion, restroom facilities, parking, play fields, and lawn areas for gatherings. A niece of Joe Mumford, who the park is named after due to his dedication to the community, was in attendance.
