KSP hosting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day event Saturday

Kentucky State Police is partnering with the United States Drug Enforcement Agency on Saturday to encourage citizens to clean out their medicine cabinets and dispose of old medicine safely.

According to the a news release, collection activities will take place from 10:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 16 locations throughout the state. KSP Commissioner Rick Sanders says, “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and health issue by providing a convenient way for citizens to help prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands.”

According to the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.
