Former Lyon County teacher, coach arrested

A former Lyon County teacher and coach suspected of being involved in sexual exploitation offenses has been arrested.

Lyon County Sheriff Brent White received an anonymous tip Saturday morning regarding a school employee that included specific information. A news release says the sheriff immediately contacted Lyon County School System Superintendent Russ Tilford and the district provided assistance in the investigation.

The investigation began to extend outside of Lyon County and Kentucky State Police assigned multiple detectives to the case.

On Sunday morning, KSP arrested 33-year old Michael Derek McCuiston of Providence in Webster County and charged him with tampering with physical evidence. Police say McCuiston is a former teacher and coach in the Lyon County School District and additional charges may be pending in Lyon County.

Evidence was seized and has been forwarded to the Kentucky State Police Electronic Crime Branch in Frankfort.

Sheriff White says McCuiston is suspected of being involved in sexual exploitation related offenses while in his previous employment. Police are working to identify any potential victims in the case and will be contacting parents and guardians when those victims are identified.

Anyone with information that may be helpful to the investigation is encouraged to contact Kentucky State Police or the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
