Hopkinsville City Council heard the monthly financial report and heard from police chief Clayton Sumner on recent shooting incidents during its regular meeting Tuesday night.

There have been numerous shots fired incidents and one homicide in Hopkinsville over the last few weeks and Chief Sumner says gun violence is a growing problem in the region.

He believes there’s a larger cultural problem where witnesses to crimes aren’t stepping forward to help investigators make an arrest—citing the recent murder of William McAllister on East Second Street—where video surveillance showed several people in close proximity to the shooting.

Chief Sumner says it’s going to take the community working together to calm some of the gun violence.

In other action, Chief Financial Officer Robert Martin says revenue growth from the city’s income tax has stagnated and he’ll be projecting a very small amount of growth for the upcoming fiscal year.

It was announced that Hopkinsville has officially received the “Tree City USA” designation and the Sixth Street Boutique and West and Witherspoon received the Keep Hopkinsville Beautiful awards.

Pennyroyal Arts Council Executive Director Margaret Primm was surprised when friends, family and coworkers arrived during her comments to recognize her for her efforts during renovations to the Alhambra Theatre.

Mayor Carter Hendricks and Magistrate Mark Cansler officially proclaimed it National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
