Josh Bell homered and drove in two as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Reds 7-5 in Pittsburgh. Derek Dietrich homered twice in the loss for the Reds. Yasiel Puig was one of five players ejected after a brawl ensued when Dietrich had a ball thrown behind him by winning pitcher Chris Archer. Anthony DeSclafani took the loss for the Reds, who have dropped eight of nine to begin the season. The Reds are off today.
Elsewhere in the National League: The St. Louis Cardinals topped the San Diego Padres 4-1 in Busch Stadium behind the pitching of Adam Wainwright, who allowed one run and struck out nine over six innings. Paul DeJong put the Cards ahead with a fourth inning two-run double. Yadier Molina had three hits and scored a run for St. Louis, which avoided a three-game sweep. The Cardinals open a series with the Los Angeles Dodgers this evening.
Dansby Swanson hit a single to left to walk off the Miami Marlins in a 4-3 win for the Atlanta Braves. Swanson also hit a home run in the fourth for Atlanta, while Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the first. The Braves have won five of their last six and are off today.
Christian Yelich clubbed a two-run homer and plated three as the Milwaukee Brewers doubled up the Chicago Cubs 4-2 in Milwaukee. The Cubs are 1 and 7 to start the season and welcome the Pittsburgh Pirates to Wrigley Field this afternoon.
