Investigation continues into truck explosion

Investigation continues into an explosion that damaged a pickup early Wednesday morning on Nelson Drive.

A Hopkinsville Police Department incident report says it’s being investigated locally as third-degree arson and lists the owner of the pickup as Enterprise Rental. The names of two individuals are also listed as victims on the report, though no one was injured.

As previously reported, the explosion happened about 1:40 a.m. Wednesday in the 2700 block of Nelson near Sylvan Terrace. It could be heard through much of the city and officers arrived to find smoke coming from the vehicle.

The explosion caused severe damage to the truck, especially on the pickup’s right side.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was called to assist with the investigation. Public Affair Specialist Stephanie Collins says the ATF can’t say exactly what caused the explosion this early in the investigation, but it’s being investigated as a criminal act.

A bomb-sniffing K9 was called in from the Nashville office to assist with the investigation.

Anyone with information on the incident can call the local anonymous Crime Stoppers TIPS line at 270-887-TIPS.
