Soap Box Derby moves to May, signups still open

The Kiwanis Soap Box Derby is gearing up for the big day, for which signups are still being accepted and will happen earlier in the year than normal.

The Soap Box Derby will take place on May 18 this year, according to Derby Co-Chair Annie Catron, who says it’s their hope that the date change will both bring in more participants and more pleasant weather.

The Super Kids race, which is a derby race for children with special needs, will happen the night before on May 17 and there will a food truck and races for adults to participate in that night as well. Before those races however, there will be build clinics on April 13 and the 20 and Catron says they’ve changed up how they do build clinics to help more kids build their cars.

Signups are still open for any interested children who want to race, though the deadline for that is April 21. To signup, contact the derby committee at 270-498-3431 and the winners of each division on race day go on to compete in the World Championship Race in July.
