Cleaning up tax issue, providing pension relief to agencies priorities in session’s final days

Three of the final four days of the 2019 session of the Kentucky General Assembly are this week and it’s expected to be a hectic time in Frankfort.

Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County says two priorities are legislation to provide pension contribution relief to quasi-governmental agencies and to fix problems in the tax code caused by a court decision and unintended consequences of last year’s tax reform.

Representative Jason Petrie of Elkton believes support is growing to help health departments, domestic violence shelters and other agencies that would be financially crippled if their required pension contribution spikes in July.

Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke says the tax legislation would also give relief to non-profit agencies that have been forced to deal with sales tax issues.

All local lawmakers agree that overall, broad pension reform won’t happen during this session.
