Severe weather, flooding possible this weekend

Severe weather and flash flooding will be threats with another round of rough weather set to make its way across western Kentucky and middle Tennessee Friday night and Saturday.

Rick Shanklin is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Paducah and says the times of most concern are late Friday night, early Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon and evening. A flash flood watch has been issued for all of western Kentucky from 6 p.m. Friday evening through Saturday night.

It’s already been one of the wettest Februarys on record and the region could see another 3 inches or more of rain this weekend.

Recent flooding concerns have centered mostly around creeks, streams and rivers—but Shanklin says heavy rain associated with thunderstorms Saturday will create a flash flooding threat.

It’s been almost a year ago exactly that tornadoes caused severe damage at the Eagle Crossing Apartments on Calvin Drive and killed a woman near Adairville. Shanklin says many of the parameters two days out look similar to what they did last year.

Damaging straight-line winds will be a major threat, in addition to heavy rain and potential tornadoes.
