Cadiz man facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting girlfriend

An investigation into a disturbance on Bassett Street Sunday morning led to the arrest of a Cadiz man on multiple charges.

Officers responded to the home about 9:15 a.m. and determined that 23-year old Louise Hopkins of Cadiz had been in a fight with his 20-year old girlfriend, according to the report.

Hopkins allegedly took the victim’s cell phone and smashed it on the ground when she tried to call 911. He fled the scene, but was located several minutes later on North Main Street.

He claimed he was stabbed by his girlfriend and showed a small cut, but the victim said Hopkins pushed her down some stairs and that she began swinging a kitchen knife in self-defense when he tried to pin her down.

Police say Hopkins tossed aside a backpack when he saw officers approaching.

A search of the backpack revealed a bag of marijuana.

Hopkins was arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault, intimidating a participant in the legal process, tampering with evidence, criminal mischief and possession of marijuana.
