Warrant: Man fleeing police left child behind in wrecked truck

An arrest warrant for child abuse, assault, fleeing or evading police and several other charges was served Monday afternoon against a Hopkinsville man.

It alleges that on October 14th of last year, 34-year old Melvin Wilcox kicked his child’s mother in the face and then fled from police in his vehicle at a high rate of speed.

He eventually wrecked his pickup into a wood line on Glass Avenue and fled on foot, leaving behind his eight-year old son who was trapped inside.

The child was extricated by the Hopkinsville Fire Department and taken by EMS to Jennie Stuart Medical Center for treatment of lacerations.

Wilcox was recently arrested in Tennessee and then extradited to the Christian County Jail.

He’s charged with fourth-degree assault, first-degree criminal child abuse, two counts of fleeing or evading police, abandonment of a minor, leaving the scene of an accident and traffic violations.
