Military representatives speak to CCHS students

Christian County High School is in the process of becoming a ‘Work Ready’ school and students with an interest in joining the military after graduation heard from representatives of three branches in the school’s library Monday morning.

Christian County High School started the ‘Get Real, Get Ready’ initiative where sophomores through seniors select a post-graduation pathway.  The students choose from military, workforce, two-year technical training or college, or a four-year college degree.

The Chamber of Commerce’s Workforce and Education Development program, Mental Mapping, provides career coaching as well as small group discussions to assists students in their chosen post-graduation pathway.

Monday’s discussion featured former Marine and current Jailer Brad Boyd and representatives of the Air Force, Army and Marines.

Jailer Boyd says he’d likely be in the jail had he not joined the Marines during a time of turmoil in his life as a teenager.

Staff Sgt. Tyler Carr of the Air Force joined after not finding many opportunities for success in his small hometown.

All of the representatives urged the students to be responsible and to stay out of trouble—as bad decisions made as a teen can limit their options after graduation.

The students asked several questions in a session that lasted for over an hour. Some say they want to go to college first and then join the military, while others were not certain which path they will take at this time.

The representatives reminded students the military will help them get a college degree, minus the student loan debt most students incur.
