Westerfield out of AG race

State Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County is dropping out of the race for Kentucky Attorney General.

The Republican says after talking it over with his wife, he decided he isn’t going to commit the time necessary to run a statewide campaign with a growing family and duties in the General Assembly.

Westerfield says he showed four years ago that it’s not impossible to do a good job of running for statewide office while representing his constituents in Frankfort; he just won’t do it this time around.

He says he enjoyed the 2015 campaign, but he feels he needs to be at home more with his wife and two young children.

Westerfield says he’s been overwhelmed by the support he has received, but hopes his decision to step away will give another qualified candidate the opportunity to run their campaign as it should be run.

Daniel Cameron, who formerly served as legal counsel for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, has announced he’s running for state Attorney General as a Republican and northern Kentucky Republican state Senator Will Shroeder filed for the post Friday. Former Attorney General Greg Stumbo is running as a Democrat.
