Crime down in Hopkinsville over last five years

Violent crime and overall crime has dropped over the last five years, according to information released Friday morning by Hopkinsville Police Chief Clayton Sumner.

He says overall reported crime has seen a 21 percent decrease since 2013. Robberies, burglaries and thefts from vehicles have dropped—but shoplifting complaints have slightly increased. Those are the “Focus on Four” areas HPD has put an increased emphasis toward.

Violent crime, over the same time frame, has seen a 28 percent decrease.

Chief Sumner credits the men and women of the Hopkinsville Police Department, as well as the citizens of Hopkinsville who continue to work with police to make the city safer.

He also noted that 2018 was a challenging year for HPD, as Officer Phillip Meacham was killed in the line of duty on March 30th.
