HPD: Man shot in chest, one arrested for assault

One man was arrested and another is being treated for a gunshot wound following an incident New Year’s Eve afternoon.

According to the Hopkinsville police report, officers responded first to Jennie Stuart Medical Center, where staff were reporting that Lendie Johnson of Hopkinsville had walked into the Emergency Room with a gunshot wound to the chest.  He was taken to a Nashville hospital for treatment.

Investigation determined that while the shooting had taken place at 101 Talbert Drive Apartment 3, the shooting was related to an incident that occurred shortly before that had occurred on East 13th Street. A concerned citizen reported that three males had entered an East 13th Street home with a large gun.

One of the suspects who had allegedly entered the home was 19-year old Ajaizion Johnson of Hopkinsville, who was identified as the man who shot Lendie Johnson by a witness. A search of the home revealed a rifle, which was reportedly stolen from the victim and a pistol, which is the weapon officers suspect was used to shoot the victim.

Ajaizion Johnson was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment and theft of a firearm. He was also served with additional warrants for unrelated offenses.
