Relay hosts annual Christmas tree ceremony

Christian County Relay for Life remembered those who have been lost to cancer and those who are battling the disease during its annual Christmas tree service Saturday afternoon at Jennie Stuart Medical Center.

In a program that was streamed live on Relay’s Facebook page, organizer Pam Futrell reminded those who fight and those who grieve that they are not alone.

The Rev. Deandre Leavell led in prayer and told the story of his mother, Vendella, who lost her battle to cancer earlier this month. He says she remained strong for her family and that she would want them to continue to support Relay after her passing because she was always thinking of others.

Her name was one of many on ornaments adorning the Relay tree—as loved ones were able to make a donation to honor an individual.

Futrell, twice a cancer survivor, says it’s their hope that one day the efforts of many will result in a cure for cancer and such events will no longer be necessary.

Circuit Judge John Atkins, a cancer survivor himself, read the names of everyone on the tree to conclude the service.
