Gander, Newfoundland says crash victims never forgotten

Residents of Gander, Newfoundland gathered Wednesday morning as they do every year to reassure loved ones of the victims of the 1985 plane crash that they are not forgotten.

Michelle Dove sang the American and Canadian national anthems and Gander Mayor Percy Farwell says the town will always honor and remember the 248 Fort Campbell soldiers and eight crew members who were killed at the site where a memorial now stands.

Councillor Brian Dove read “Final Flight,” a poem pinned by Herb Greening recounting some of the victims’ final moments as they looked forward to celebrating Christmas at home.

Mayor Farwell also acknowledged the service of the Canadian military and first responders who went to the crash site that morning and were witnesses to a tragic scene that no training could have prepared them to encounter.
