Freezing rain causes several accidents

Freezing rain was the story Sunday morning, with numerous accidents reported in places where black ice has coated roads, bridges and overpasses.

Christian County ECC had received reports of eight weather-related accidents by about 6 a.m.—with all but one on Interstate 24 and the Pennyrile Parkway. Dispatchers say three of the accidents had injuries, but all were thought to be minor in nature.

Christian County Sheriff’s Deputy Andy Sanderson says not all roads are slick in all places, but black ice has been a major problem this morning, especially on bridges and overpasses.

He says stay at home if you can this morning and allow efforts by the road departments and warmer temperatures later in the day to do their jobs in melting the ice.

Montgomery County Dispatch reported a couple accidents near the Wilma Rudolph Boulevard interchange at Exit 4 on I-24.

A dispatcher in Todd County said they had not had any accidents early this morning, but they had received reports of black ice on roads. Todd County Sheriff’s Sgt. Patrick Turner is advising people to stay home this morning if possible, saying portions of roads are wet and others are frozen and extremely slick with black ice. Trigg County Dispatch had received a couple of reports of non-injury accidents on I-24 and on Bypass Road. Cadiz Police Officer Scott Raup says bridges and overpasses there are ice-covered.
