Hopkinsville City Council recently approved a municipal order to change the name of Fort Campbell Memorial Park to Gander Memorial Park and there will be a groundbreaking ceremony next week as officials erect a new sign.
The park at the intersection of Fort Campbell Boulevard and the Pennyrile Parkway honors the 248 Fort Campbell soldiers and crew members who died when their plane crashed soon after takeoff near Gander, Newfoundland in December 1985.
The ceremony will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 23 at the park and it’s hosted by the Christian County Chamber of Commerce.
The name change came at the recommendation of the Chamber Military Affairs Committee.
