Sanctuary, Inc. is working to put the word out about sexual assault awareness and prevention in the month of April, and Wednesday was Chalk the Walk Day.
Sanctuary staff traveled around Hopkinsville to write messages of love and support on sidewalks in front of businesses. New Executive Director Heather Lancaster says the messages can take many forms, but they’re all about bringing attention to the fact that sexual assault happens to someone every day.
She says she hopes it does more than bring awareness, but that it also shows survivors that people are there to help and honor them.
There are a couple more events planned for the month, including Denim Day on April 25, where Lancaster urges everyone to wear blue jeans to bring awareness to the violence. She wants people to have open discussions with their children about staying safe and to encourage victims to report any assaults.
