Reds and Cardinals win, Braves lose

Tyler Mahle and three relievers combined to help the Reds shut out the Cubs 1-0 at Great American Ball Park in the opener of a two-game series.

Mahle struck out seven over six innings of work and Raisel Iglesias got his first save. Adam Duvall drove in the only Cincinnati run with a groundout in the fourth. It was the first win for the Reds. The series finale is tonight with air time at 5:10 on News Radio 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

The St. Louis Cardinals spoiled the Milwaukee Brewers home opener with an 8-4 win at Miller Park. Paul DeJong stayed hot going 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and two runs scored. It was DeJong’s third homer in two days.

Miles Mikolas came away with the win and helped himself with a two-run shot of his own. The teams face off again tonight in Milwaukee.

Sean Newcomb was knocked around for six runs in four and a third innings as the Atlanta Braves were blown out 8-1 by the Washington Nationals at SunTrust Park. Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer for Washington. Freddie Freeman singled in Atlanta’s lone run in the fourth inning. The teams play again this evening.
