CCPS would cut jobs under Gov’s proposed budget

As the Christian County School Board waits for a budget to pass the Kentucky legislature, it approved the draft staffing allocation for 2018-19 Thursday that cuts about 20 employee contracts from the district.

Twelve of those positions would be classified and eight would be certified, which are instructional positions such as teachers. Chief Administrative Officer Laura Morris says they had to make difficult decisions based on the proposed budget that contains cuts to transportation and other services that the district will now have to pay for.

She says if the budget cuts are not as severe as expected once a budget is passed, she can bring the allocations back to the board for changes.

Morris says the district will save approximately $1 million with the elimination of those contracts and at least a portion of those cuts will happen naturally with attrition. Which position will be cut is up to the determination of each school.

In other action, contracts with surrounding counties concerning non-resident students were renewed. Non-resident student contracts are for when a resident of the school district decides to send their student to a different school district in another county. When the student goes to a different district, the county they are a resident of loses the funding they would receive for that child. At the moment, seven students are going to Trigg County and 10 students are going to Hopkins County.

Students from Gateway Academy made a presentation about the Mobile Lab Project they will be bringing to elementary schools across the district that teaches about math, engineering and robotics.                                                                                                **
