Traffic has transitioned to the new Lake Barkley Bridge along US 68-80 at Canton in Trigg County and demolition of the old bridge will commence later this week.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Spokesman Keith Todd says the first step in demolishing the old bridge—removal of the concrete deck—begins this week.
Todd says the walking trail along the new bridge over Lake Barkley has not opened yet.
The old Henry R. Lawrence Memorial Bridge at Canton opened to traffic in 1932. In 1963, the bridge was elevated 10 and a half feet to allow additional clearance for the impounding of Lake Barkley.
Approximately 3,000 vehicles cross Lake Barkley at the bridge on an average day.
