Hopkins Co. standoff ends with suspect shooting self

A standoff with police in Hopkins County Saturday night ended with the suspect shooting himself.

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department went to a Sandcut Road home about 8:30 p.m. to locate a man wanted on a warrant, according to a news release, which says the man brandished a handgun and threatened to take his own life.

After a lengthy standoff, the Madisonville Police Department’s Emergency Response Team was able to make entry into the house.  Officers located the man in a back room still holding the firearm.  Police say he refused to surrender and shot himself.

He was transported to Baptist Hospital and then to an undisclosed hospital in Indiana, where his condition is unknown.

Police have not released the man’s name.
