HES to expand fiber optic services

Hopkinsville Electric System announced at a Christian County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event Thursday that they will begin expanding their fiber optic capabilities in the city.

HES President and CEO Jeff Hurd made the announcement to a packed house, saying the company plans to bring one gigabyte of fiber internet service, which is around 100 times faster than the speed currently offered.

He says they’ll have more information about when the program will start rolling out in the next few weeks, but they hope to hear good response from customers.

Customers will be able to go online to the HES website and complete a survey, telling HES what internet they desire and if the increased fiber is a good idea. Hurd says businesses in particular want high-speed fiber internet, so the move could make Hopkinsville more attractive to businesses looking to settle in the area.

People will have the option to keep their current internet or upgrade. With internet needs changing all the time, Hurd says they hope to eventually have the gig of fiber optic internet available citywide and depending on when that happens, expand further into the county and surrounding counties.
