Princess Theater shooting suspects receive new defense attorneys

Princess Theater shooting suspects, Deovion Day, Zamarius Humphries and Jaquavian Spencer appeared in Christian Circuit Court on Wednesday where it was announced that two of the men will be receiving new defense attorneys.

Humphries and Spencer, who were represented by Sands Chewning, are charged with first-degree assault in relation to a shooting outside of the Princess Theater in 2021. They both allegedly fired guns at one another and Humphries was shot in the neck.

Day, who is represented by Daniel Whitley, is charged with murder after he allegedly attempted to shoot Spencer during the incident but fatally shot Aniyah Collins and injured Gteria Acree.

Chewning had to withdraw from representing Humphries and Spencer together as a result of evidence that was discussed at a hearing on June 4 that led to Circuit Judge Andrew Self ruling for the pair to be tried in court separately. As a result of the new evidence, Chewning could not represent either of the men, because it would be a conflict of interest.

In court, Chewning announced that Cody Hooks will be representing Humphries and Ramon McGee will be representing Spencer.

Hooks appeared in court via phone call and McGee was unable to attend because of a current trial. Hooks and McGee are set to appear in court with their clients on Monday for another pretrial conference.
