Richardson readying to become state senator, Westerfield reflects on his time in the role

Now that the 2024 session of the Kentucky General Assembly has come and gone, it represents the end of an era, as Senator Whitney Westerfield has chosen to not seek re-election to that office.

Speaking with the Kiwanis Club of Hopkinsville recently alongside his fellow local legislators, Senator Westerfield says it’s been bittersweet—he’s been honored to represent his constituents for the last 12 years, but he was also ready to be done.

There’s still some months left to his term and he says he’ll remain ready to listen to his constituents and pass on any concerns they have. He says he’s been blessed to have a great relationship with his legislative peers, and he knows they’ll continue to do just that with Craig Richardson, who will be the person taking his place in Frankfort next year.

Richardson—who will represent Christian, Muhlenberg and Caldwell Counties starting January—said a few words to the Kiwanians that day, saying he’s been working hard to prepare all he can before he takes office, but he knows there’s still more to learn.

He says he spent a lot of time in Frankfort this past session, and he’s been hearing from citizens already about their concerns and questions.

Richardson is unopposed on the November ballot, meaning he will be the new state senator for District 3.
