Six girls killed in I-24 accident in Tennessee

Six children were killed and two adults were injured in a two-vehicle accident early Sunday morning about 23 miles from the state line on I-24 in Robertson County, Tennessee.

It happened just before 2 a.m. on the westbound side near the 23 mile-marker and Robertson County EMS says crews arrived to find nine people involved. One man who had been driving a car that was just west of the immediate scene was not injured.

The other automobile involved was a car found upside down with very extensive damage.

One man from that vehicle had minor injuries and was taken by EMS to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville.

A woman found outside and who is believed to have been ejected in the crash was in critical condition and she was flown by Life Flight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Six females between the ages of 1 and 18 were found outside of the overturned car and they were all pronounced dead the scene, as efforts to resuscitate them were unsuccessful.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash that closed the westbound lanes for approximately nine hours. Names of those involved have not been released and police have not said if anyone is facing charges in connection with the incident.

Officials say mental health and counseling services were being provided to first responders who assisted at the scene.

EMS crews and firefighters from Robertson and Cheatham counties responded.
