Trenton pauses for Memorial Day program

Trenton honored those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom at its annual Memorial Day service Sunday afternoon at Edgewood Cemetery.

A crowd of about 40 gathered, despite distant thunder and a threat of rain. Trenton Mayor Jo Ann Holder says it’s important to gather and remember those who were willing to sacrifice whatever it took for their country.

Jimmy Shemwell served with the Air Force in Vietnam and is the chairman of the Todd County Veterans Committee. He read the names of every Todd County native who died in service and says because of them, Americans can freely assemble in peace today.

He urged those in attendance to never forget prisoners of war and those missing in action.

Julie Hamlet read the names of all veterans from Trenton—past and present, Amanda Fowler Sadler sang God Bless America and bugler Will Shelton played Taps.
