Todd Co. Jailer candidates spar during debate

The most contentious of the Rotary Club of Elkton debates last week was undoubtedly the race for Todd County Jailer between Jeff Penick and incumbent Greg Allen, who are facing off in a rematch from 2014.

The candidates disagreed on how significant of a problem drugs and cell phones are in the jail, with Allen saying they are usually able to use relationships with inmates to locate and dispose of narcotics that get in the facility and that it’s been years since a cell phone was found.

Penick says he’d do a ‘shakedown’ if he’s elected and believes he’ll find contraband in the jail.

Penick blamed Allen’s leadership for what he sees as a high employee turnover rate and believes he has the answers to keep deputy jailers happy.

Allen says his ability to retain employees improved dramatically when fiscal court approved his request for increased wages and he disputed Penick’s claim that Todd County deputy jailers are leaving for other jails in the area.
