Nick Williams delivered the go-ahead, pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning and the Philadelphia Phillies held on to top the Cincinnati Reds 6-5. Scooter Gennett and Billy Hamilton each had two hits, an RBI, and a run scored for the Reds.
Tucker Barnhart went deep and Kevin Quackenbush took the loss. Game two is tonight in Philadelphia with air time at 5:35 on News Radio 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.

Elsewhere in the National League: It was a rough debut for new St. Louis Cardinals closer Greg Holland. He walked four batters to force in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning as the Cards lost 5-4 to the Milwaukee Brewers. The series continues tonight at Busch Stadium.

The Atlanta Braves were shut down by Max Scherzer in a 2-0 loss to the Washington Nationals in D.C. Scherzer struck out 10 in a complete-game, two-hitter for Washington. Julio Teheran pitched six innings of two-run ball to take the loss. Nick Markakis and Kurt Suzuki had the two for Atlanta. The series continues tonight.

The Chicago Cubs will try again to play their home opener. Monday’s scheduled game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field was postponed due to snow. The teams will attempt to make that up today, with first pitch at 1:20 p.m.
