Hoptown sweeps UHA in 8th district baseball twin bill

A chilly evening was the backdrop for an 8th district doubleheader at UHA’s Chris Simmons Field as the Blazers hosted Hopkinsville.

In the first game, Hopkinsville won 10-1. It was a 3-1 game before the Tigers sent 11 men to the plate in the 7th inning and scored seven times. The big hits of that inning were two run scoring singles by John Duvall and Michael Graham. Robert Justus struck out 14 in the game and held University Heights to just three hits, two of them from Drew McGowan.

In the second game, Hopkinsville won 8-5. The Tigers scored four times in the bottom of the first and added a run in the second before the Blazers cut the lead to 4-2 in the third. The Tigers then got a run in the fourth to go up 5-2 with the Blazers adding a run in the fifth and two in the top of the sixth before Hopkinsville got two insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th.

Layne Jorgensen had three hits including a double and three RBI for the Tigers who got a brilliant relief pitching appearance from Zach Caudill who struck out 11. Losing pitcher Dan Johnson had two hits for the Blazers in defeat.
Hopkinsville is now 2-0 overall and in district play while University Heights is 1-2 in both overall and district games.
