Youth Council talks issues facing schools, community

The Mayor’s Youth Council sat on a panel and fielded questions about education, gun violence in schools and community involvement at the Delta Youth Summit Monday morning.

Hosted by Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., the event was well attended inside the Boys and Girls Club of Hopkinsville, with other students, elected officials and community members. When asked what the biggest concern facing people today is, besides violence, Brooke McGee said it was discrimination.

With the recent school shootings in Marshall County and in Florida sparking debates, Edward Lee Major said that while it may be easy to get a gun, it goes deeper with that in what he calls a heart problem.

Many of the panelists agreed that something needs to happen, as too many students have died at the result of shootings and students shouldn’t be afraid to get an education.

Crystal Clevesy says she found the event inspiring and educational, and she urged other youth in the community to speak out and have their voices heard.

Other topics included finding a way to keep young people in Christian County or return here, how to create good school environments and how to get more people involved in the community.                                                                                                **
